In 8th September 1998, there is the first day we lived in the Outward bound for
Seven days. We arrived at the campsite at 13:30 and checked in at 13:45.
We had a
first meeting in the main hall with the other people who join the camp. In the
meeting, we were set into a group call "Ruby". There have the six-group sit in the hall. At 14:30, the headmaster
of the Outward Bound School arrived and gave us some instruction of the campsite. He
told us the three main rules, No Drinks, No Smoke and No contact with outside.
He also told us the slogan of the Outward Bound.
Later on, our
tutor came back, since he need to see the doctor. His name is Stephen Ho. He
is a kind man. At 14:45, Stephen led us to walk around the campsite and have some
small games. The first game is outside the main hall, call "Ameba".
Ameba
Game rule:
Half
of the group hold the hand to the other and form a small circle. The other six
people also hold the hand to the other and form a big circle outside the small one.
It calls "Ameba". Then we must walk up the step to the top of the main hall.
It is about two-floor height. We can change the outlook of the "Ameba", but we
cannot loose one's hold.
In this game, we must have teamwork and cooperate with other. We cannot walk up the
step alone. Otherwise, the "Ameba" will break down. Then our leader
says one, two, three, and our team walk up one step. By our hard working, we
success to arrive to the top. It calls "Green Top".
After the game,
Stephen led us to the canteen and told us that we must be the duty group for some of the
meals. We must set the table before the meal and clear up the canteen after the meal
when we are on duty.
Afterwards, we
had the second game "Untight Human Ring".
Untight Human Ring
Games rule:
In this
game, we must hold the other member's hand, but we cannot hold the people's hand beside.
Then we will locked together. We only can move our body the make us unlock, but
cannot release the holding hands.
Then we went to the equipment store with Stephen. He tolds us that this storeroom
keeps all the equipment we need to use in these seven days. And we check all the
equipment enough or not. Then our storekeeper, Ah Yin, check it carefully.
Afterward, we have the third game outside the storeroom. It calls "Queue up of
Age".
Queue up of Age
Game rule:
We all stand on a narrow stone-step ramdonly. Then we must line up form our
birthday. But we cannot make any sound to tell the other people our birthday.
In this game, we
use the finger to show the other what is our birthday. And also need to help other
people to cross the other people. This game likes the two games before. We
also need to cooperate with other. If any person is selfish or lazy. The game
will failure.
After
this game, we went back to the main hall and brought all our personal belongings to the
dormitory. The boys and the girls were separates into two rooms. The boys were
in the lower part and girls were in the upper. Then Stephen said: "You can
settle down your personal belongings, and then wear your swimming suit and go to the
harbour at 17:30."
At
17:30, we all arrived at the harbour and have the SEA JUMPING (jump into the
sea from a 10 meters tall harbour). It was a first solo game.
After
the SEA JUMPING, we have the dinner at 18:30. Afterward, we went to the main hall at
20:00.
In the main hall,
we shared our goals, why do join this camp. Then made our group slogan. We
decided our goal is understanding ourselves then facing the worst and then strengthen
ourselves. And Stephen also went us to design a group song in our free time.
Then we went to our dormitory to design our song. At 23:00. Our group song was born.
After this, we went to bed.

It was the second day of
our course; also we were going to spend the whole day on training. We got up at 5:30am,
because we had to assemble at car park at 6:00am for morning exercise and our first
mission in the day — "jump
off the pier". Although we had already done that activity yesterday
before, some of our team-member felt difficult to complete since the pier is very high,
about 10m above the sea level.
After all of us
had jumped into the sea, we sang our own team song, which was prepared by us on last night
and did exercise.
At about 7:00am,
we returned to hostel for cleaning the male's toilet and the ground level corridor, which
was our team duty on that day. Moreover, we were required to prepare the breakfast,
just set up and cleaned the table for the other teams. At 8:20am, there was an
assembly at green top, since we were duty group on that day, we were responsible for
reported the news, and the weather forecast to the others. Also, we were introduced
our team song to them with dancing.
Challenge Pole
We had
the second challenge on that day, the "challenge pole". It was a mission that one of our team-member climbed
on a quite narrow timber rod (only enough to stand on it with our feet),
it is about 6-7m high, and he/she had to stand on the top of that rod without a handle.
Then he/she needed to jump off the rod and tried to catch the metal bar of the swing, it
is about 3-4 meters in front of him/her at eye level horizontally. The others were
working on the safety device, we were controlling three ropes which were holding the
players, it was used to ensure that he/she would not get hurt in case that he/she fell
down from the sky and landing.
Most of us could
complete the mission eventually. Everyone could be able to do it, the secret is that
if you have the confidence, and then you would success.
There was no exception on "challenge pole" activity;
we had an evaluation and discussion among our team. What have we learned in the
activity, what factors to make us success and fail.
We had a packed
lunch that day because we were going to accept the third challenge — "Rafting”, therefore, we had our
lunch on the hall to make use of the time.
RAFTING
The third activity of the second day at the Outward Bound school is Rafting. In the
afternoon, we had a Rafting after the Challenge Pole. We had some simple equipment
to build a Raft, included 4 water tanks, 4 long bamboos, 4 short bamboos and 16 ropes.
We needed rafting around the pier from the left-hand side to the other side.
We designed the
structure of the Raft before the lunch. The Raft is that the 4 water tanks to form a
square, the 4 long bamboos placed to the curve side of tanks parallel, the 4 short bamboos
placed to the ends of tanks, and used the ropes to fix the tanks and bamboos. After
we made a simple design, we had a packed lunch at the main hall.
After
the lunch, we had the division of labour. Prepared everything at the ground close to
the beach. Started building, most of us did not know how to roping, luckily, some
members knew roping, and we spent much time to learnt and built.
The Raft was made, it looked strong and hard, we pushed it on the water and tried sit on
it. It is okay and also strong and hard. We started rafting, at about 10 meter far
from the beach, the raft had some problems. The water tanks floated and the bamboos
fell down, as the ropes were not fixed. However we could continue rafting. "One two one two…" we were always rafting
and shouting, passed the pier and turned around. At the last we could reached the
destination completely. We washed the equipment and did the next activity.
We would have a journey on
canoeing after a few days, so that we like to practice the skill to escape from the canoe
when it is up-side down. It was important for us to practice the skill before the
journey on canoeing because it would be very dangerous if we could not escape from the
canoe when it is up-side down.
Before taking our dinner at 6:00pm, we were having a lesson on the camping equipment
appreciation. We had to learn how to use and pack the different equipment, like: the
camp, gas stove etc. because we would use them on our following activities.
On the
following day, we were scheduled to climb the "Spider
rock", a natural cliff in Sai Kung. We would
need a lot of related equipment to help us, it was very important to check the equipment
first to ensure it functioned.
As I have
mentioned above, we would have an evaluation on each activity, it had no excuse in "rafting".
We had a
briefing of it on that night after dinner. Although we were all very tried after
finished all the activities in the day, but we all very excited in the following
activities.

On the third day, all of us went to climb
up the Spider Rock, everyone brought with the heavily knapsacks, which included
10 bottles of water, 14 ropes and some other safety device.
We left the Outward Bound School at about 7:15a.m., and walked through to the Spider
Rock, it is necessary to walk for about 2.5 hours to the Spider Rock.
We
arrived at about 9:15a.m., and we had our breakfast. Our instructor, Stephen, set up
all safety facilities for us to climb up & down the rock with two separate routes.
There are two important positions: belayer and the second belayer. They need to
control the safety rope that connect to the climbers. With the help of Stephen and
another instructor, belayers and the second belayers, we started our climbing activity.
In fact, there was no doubt for us to trust that safety system with the control of the
belayers and the second belayers.
Everyone needs to climb up
and down the rock. For climbing up section, we climbed like the Special
Duty Unit (S.D.U.) by using a rope, with our body stood nearly perpendicular to
the rock. We needed to go down step by step and the whole process just spent only a
few minutes. After arrival the floor, you need to tell the belayer on the top, 'I arrive'
in Chinese.
The next section was climbing up the same rock with another route, it is harder than
climbing down because it is necessary to think seriously which points you can put your
foot on or which points you can catch with your hands. Moreover, full concentration
and accurate judgment. Since that day was a rainy day, the rock is quite slippery,
so, the hardness of climbing was increased. However, members with long legs may
find easier to do in this activity.
There are several wordings needed to learn before and used during the climbing process.
Belayer |
: rope below (Belayer gives the rope to the climber
down the rock |
Climber |
: belay on (Climber have already put on the safety
device) |
Belayer |
: taking in (Belayer collect the rope) |
Climber |
: that's me (Climber feel enough of collection of
the rope) |
Belayer |
: climb when ready |
Climber |
: climbing |
Belayer |
: okay |
During climbing up the rock, climber may ask for more rope by saying, 'More rope'. Also, he can ask
the belayer on the top for collect more rope by saying, 'Talk
in'.
Anyway, everyone can climb successfully by following the instructions. We could
enjoy our great lunch, which included bread with jam, tinned food, apples, etc. Since all
of us had used much energy, so we felt that the lunch prepared by Outward Bound School was
very good.

Today, we down
the hill then go to the sea. We paddle a canoe! Most of us are the first time
that travels by canoe.
Before we started, we packed all the necessary equipment and food in our water-proofed
bags. We should assure that the bags were closed tightly, otherwise, our food might
become salty food!
At 1:00pm after our lunch, we started our journey. We were divided into six groups
since one canoe can carry 2 people. There are three checkpoints today. We
started at outward-bound school and the destination is Pak Sha O.
In each
check-point, we had two people being navigators who are responsible to navigate the trip.
Luckily, no one drop into the sea in the whole trip! On the other hand, no one drop into
the sea did not meant that we had dry bodies. It was because we were propelled
under storm and rain! We put our big effort to paddle the canoes.
Moreover, as most of us were the beginners, our canoes are usually propelled in a zigzag
way rather than in a straight line.
By the way, we
arrived the camp site (Pak Sha O) at 5:30pm safety.
Although we were both very
tired, we began to prepare our sleeping place and dinner immediately before sunset.
The moment we should celebrate when we had a big bowl noodle in our hands. Oh, what
a big meal in the world!

Since we moved out from the PAK A at 7:30am, we wake up at 6:00am. Someone was going
to prepare the breakfast and others was going to pack the equipment. After the
breakfast, we warm up and pick the equipment into the canoe.
However the coach has a
rehearsal of emergency case, one people had injured of hand and legs. He was
bleeding. They stay in a safe position and always have someone with the injured.
Some members and the instructor went to the living area to find some helper and called the
Outward Bound School. After the rehearsal of the emergency case, we started to return to
the school.
We begin
to pay full attention to radio broadcast because the No.1 stand-by signal
is hoisted. Sometimes the sky is full of heavy clouds. Rough and huge waves
can be seen in the sea. We hear the howling whistle of the fierce wind.
The first check point is Kau
Sai Chau and the second check point is Yim Tin Tsai. We had our lunch on
a little beach and then went to the finish point – the school. We all carefully to move the canoe
so all arrive the school safely. On the route, we all have chanced to be the
Natvigator. Each pair of partners is very co-operation.
After we
cleaned all the equipment, we went to the pier for the last jump. This is the last
time to jump into the sea.
After
the dinner, we will also receive personal feedback on our performance from the group.
Also we prepare the food and equipment for the coming next trip.

Hiking
was the most physical and energetic exercise of the trip. We initially thought that
hiking was not a difficult activity. It was impossible for us to imagine that hiking
was such a thing would be a big challenge to our physical condition.
We needed to
learn how to use the compass and map the day before: these are the most useful tools when
hiking. If you wanted to finish the hiking journey, you should clearly know the
functions and the usage of the compass and the map. They can provide us the right
direction to the hiker. Nobody can know the direction without these two things!
We
began the hiking journey at 6:00a.m. Firstly, we assembled at the starting point by
bus. We had our breakfasts and then chose 5 navigators to lead us to the 5 checkpoints.
Although we had chosen the navigators, we all fully participated in finding the
location.
On that day, the weather was very bad. The heavy rain gave us many troubles.
For example, the wet and muddy road made us feel that it was hard to walk ahead. It
was very difficult to find out the exit and the path. Some of the paths in the map
had submerged and thus we could not find the right paths. We were then divided into
some groups to find another safety path.
Some
members felt upset and tired. But our group spirits helped us solve the difficulty.
Although the bad weather affected us, we could finally solve the problems and reached the
target place due to our cooperative efforts.
When we arrived
at the destination, we were divided into four groups in order to start the orienteering.
Each group was required to find 4-5 checkpoints before the deadline of 6:00 p.m.
The path of the orienteering was more difficult to walk than that of hiking,
because the road was so slippy. But on the other hand, the checkpoints were shorter.
We tried our best to get the right targets. It was the most interesting game
indeed.
At 6:00 p.m.,
only two groups came back. We were worried about the safety of the remaining two
groups. The only thing we could do was to wait for them. On the other hand,
we needed to prepare our dinner and build the wild camp for sleeping.
When one of the
two losing groups was back at 8:30 p.m., we were very worried about the group's safety.
The instructor was prepared to search for them. We felt that they were very
dangerous. Fortunately, this group came back at that moment. They had lost the
direction in the hill, so they needed more time to find out the target and came back.
After the orienteering, we realized the
danger of the hiking and the usefulness of compass and map. During that might we
had our dinner and we hared our experiences, it was the great undergo.
When we went back to the site, we had recalled the exciting
experience of hiking and the orienteering. It was really unforgettable experience
to all of us!

This was the seventh day of the course; Its a little bit
cool in the morning. When everyone slept so sweetly in their camp, Eric and Berry were preparing
our breadfast. It's a so touching for anyone who saw the cooked noodles, milk and
cocoa rice, after they had crept out of the camp. When we finished the wonderful
breadfast, the camps, the equipment, and even our rucksacks were packed.
At 8:00, we started to leave the camp-site, and followed the main road to the bus-stop.
Over the whole trip, this was the second time to go by bus, and it let all of us to take a
break, after the tough hiking.
About 9:00, we reached the Outward Bound school, then the equipment, the rucksack, or even
ourselves were cleaned up as quick as we could. It is because we are were the duty
group for the lunch.
Due to the
team spirit, and good co-operation, we completed all our duties in time at 12:30 and have
a great lunch with ice-bar. Everyone really thanks for god; Its the onec and the
only once we have ice-bar, the luxury dessert in Outward Bound.
After we had finished the cleaned up duty at the
canteen, we all came together to have a group discussion about hiking. All of us are
so tired, and nearly fell to sleep; its actually a serious part.
At 15:30, we have been combined with other three groups, about fifty persons to take a
mission-to transport all the people across a thick log, which horizontally hanged about
1.8m in front of us; we couldn't touch the ground under the log. It's a hard job, but we
did it for seventeen minutes.
Finally at 16:30, we have our ceremony of completed the course. Everyone was joy to
have their certificate, and murdered any photo they left, and nearly everyone bought some
souvenirs, before they left the school.
